Power Jack Repair PDF Print E-mail

What's involved in repairing the Laptop Power Jack?

First lets look at the symptoms. The Laptop Power Jack is the port where you insert the power adaptor. It's location varies according to make and model but the principal is exactly the same. In modern day laptops, this is the single most common hardware problem.
  1. Laptop battery will not charge

  2. Laptop power jack centre pin is loose or not central.

  3. Laptop will not start when power adapter is inserted and battery is flat or removed

Here we are removing a Laptop power pin. All the screws in the laptop need removed before the motherboard can be extracted.

Repairs to the laptop power socket are usually the first an engineer will attempt. Below is a Laptop motherboard we have removed.

This power pin has six pins to de-solder. On this laptop, a lot of heat is needed to remove the pin.

Look at the images on the right. In the first image we are removing the power pin. First , we heat up the pin with the iron. When the solder starts to run place the solder sucker close to the pin and suck it up. This is repeated until the pin can be removed as in the next image. The new pin is almost ready to be fitted.

The old solder needs to be fully removed. At this point all the printed circuit can be checked for damage. It is quite common for the centre power pin to have cracked away from the motherboard and in these cases there is usually very little left to solder to.

The motherboard contacts need to be clean. In the next two images you can see the before and after the solder is removed and the pin holes now are clean and ready for the new pin.

Ok so the new pin is ready to put in place. In the image above the contacts are clean and the board is in excellent condition. Great care is taken by our engineers to look after customers laptops. We treat the laptop motherboard very carefully !!!.Look at the image below. The pin is now in place pushed firmly into place. Some engineers use super glue to keep it in place while they re-solder it.

Soldering the new pin to it's location is the penultimate job. However it is essential to get the solder right. Too much can mean a short and damage to the onboard components and too little will likely make the same job in the near future.

Other considerations:

Laptops are built for mobility and as a consequence of this they are normally built very well. To remove a motherboard fundamentally means a great deal of strip down and this can be time consuming. As a rule the more you pay for a Laptop in the first place, the longer it will take to dissemble it because the build quality is better and more durable.

Our standard charge for replacing the power jack is £75.00. This assumes that there is no damage to the printed circuit and that we can solder directly to its natural site.

The laptop power pin is now firmly in place and we can give a warranty on our repair.
